Mitzvah Committee

The Mitzvah Committee welcomes Harriet Kronman as the new co-chair with Diane Kerrihard.
Many thanks to Suzie Hazan, the outgoing co-chair, for her years of dedication. Rabbi Louchheim created the Mitzvah Committee in 1998 to enrich the Rabbi’s support for our congregants by offering the necessary day-to-day support required during and after such life cycle events as birth, illness, and death. The Committee’s focus is in the areas of New Baby, Caring Calls, Transportation, Visits, and Bereavement (Shiva and Chevra Kadisha).

A new idea the Committee is implementing is that of keeping in touch with our congregation’s college students as they go off to school. Working in conjunction with the Membership Committee and Sisterhood, we will arrange to send them “care packages” at Rosh HaShanah, and at Passover for those who cannot return home for Seder. If you have children heading off to college this year, please call Paula at the office and give her their address so we can stay in touch.
The Mitzvah Committee is planning two different sessions for its members to instruct and advise them about the committee’s activities. The first will be for those who wish to participate in the Mitzvah of Chevra Kadisha, the burial society within Or Chadash that tends to the rituals of the deceased. Rabbi Louchheim and Marcia Louchheim will lead this session in August or early September. In the fall, the Committee will have several sessions discussing in detail the “how-to” of hospital visits, and of bereavement procedures.
